What does an organization chart explain?

An organization chart displays formal roles and reporting relationships. It helps readers find the relevant team and understand how responsibility is arranged across levels of an organization.

Use it to clarify the formal structure

Org charts support onboarding, restructuring discussions, and headcount planning. They do not show every informal working relationship or explain who is responsible for each step of a particular project.

Keep the hierarchy meaningful

  1. Choose roles or people. Use a consistent node format so readers know what each box represents.
  2. Verify direct managers. Do not infer reporting relationships from job seniority alone.
  3. Distinguish link types. Separate formal reporting from advisory or project relationships.
  4. Mark unfilled roles. An open position should not look like an existing employee.
  5. Date the structure. Identify whether the chart shows the current organization or a proposal.

From reporting list to hierarchy

MyMap builds the structure you describe and updates it when you request changes. The example places a CEO above engineering, finance, marketing, and operations leaders, with department leads beneath them.

Common questions

Can I use job titles without employee names?

Yes. A role-based chart is useful for planning or documentation that should remain readable as individual employees change.

How should I represent two managers?

Describe which relationship is formal reporting and which is functional or project-based. Ask for distinct labels or line styles and a legend.

Does a job title determine where a person belongs?

No. Provide the actual manager relationship. Titles can vary between teams and are not enough to infer the hierarchy.
