Test cause and consequence

Check whether character choices connect the stages. Ask to strengthen a weak escalation or clarify what changes after the climax.

What does a story arc show?

A story arc gives a broad view of how a narrative develops its conflict and resolves it. It highlights changes in tension and direction rather than listing every scene with equal weight.

Use it to diagnose the shape of a narrative

An outline may contain many events without a clear escalation. Mapping the arc can reveal a missing turning point, an unearned resolution, or an ending that answers a different question from the opening.

Make each turn earn its place

  1. Establish a central conflict. Readers need to understand what the protagonist is trying to achieve or avoid.
  2. Increase pressure meaningfully. Later obstacles should change the stakes or narrow the available choices.
  3. Identify the decisive moment. The climax should resolve or transform the story's main conflict.
  4. Show consequences. The aftermath explains what the decisive action cost or made possible.
  5. Leave room for the story's form. A five-stage arc is a useful lens, not a requirement for every narrative.

Plot stages made visible

MyMap turns your plot description into connected stages and revises the beats you identify. The Sorcerer's Stone example uses exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution; it is a labeled plot sequence rather than a numerical tension chart.

Common questions

Is a story arc the same as a scene list?

No. An arc emphasizes major changes in conflict and tension. A scene list tracks the individual units that deliver those changes.

Must every story follow five stages?

No. You can ask for the structure that suits your narrative. The five-stage example provides one common way to examine a plot.

Can I map an unfinished story?

Provide the premise and known events, then mark the undecided parts. Ask for possible turning points as options rather than treating them as settled plot facts.
