Test the boundaries

Check every example against the definition and explain why each non-example fails to qualify.

What is a Frayer model?

A Frayer model is a four-part organizer for understanding a word or concept. The sections work together: the definition states its meaning, characteristics describe it, examples demonstrate it, and non-examples clarify its boundaries.

When vocabulary needs more than recall

Use it when learners can repeat a definition but struggle to recognize the concept. Carefully chosen non-examples help reveal the difference between a defining property and a superficial resemblance.

Rules for strong examples and non-examples

  1. Fix the intended meaning. The same word can mean different things across subjects.
  2. Use defining characteristics. Avoid traits that happen to apply to only one example.
  3. Vary the examples. Show the concept in more than one familiar setting.
  4. Choose informative non-examples. Nearby cases teach more than obviously unrelated objects.
  5. Explain boundary decisions. State which defining condition a non-example fails.

How MyMap arranges the four sections

MyMap organizes the concept into editable sections. The supplied photosynthesis example illustrates the format; review its biological wording before reuse, including its mistaken equation of animals eating food with respiration.

Common questions

What makes a good non-example?

Choose something close enough to be confusing, then explain the defining condition it lacks.

Can I use the model outside vocabulary lessons?

Yes. It can clarify mathematical categories, scientific processes, or literary concepts when examples and boundaries are meaningful.

Should students fill in every section themselves?

You can provide a definition and ask learners to supply examples, or leave selected sections open for discussion.

Is every detail in the photosynthesis example correct?

No. Its non-example text incorrectly equates eating with respiration. Eating is ingestion; use corrected course wording when adapting that sample.
