Create a Bohr model of oxygen

Here's a Bohr model of oxygen showing the nucleus with 8 protons and 8 neutrons, 2 electrons in the first shell, and 6 electrons in the second shell.

01

Name the atom precisely

Give the element, isotope or mass number, and charge rather than the element name alone.

02

Draw the shell arrangement

MyMap creates a simplified nucleus-and-shell diagram from the specified particle counts.

Count and label

Review the nucleus, total electrons, and electrons in each shell, then ask for corrected counts or labels.

What is a Bohr-style shell diagram?

A Bohr-style diagram places a nucleus at the center with electrons represented on surrounding shells. It is a simplified teaching model for discussing particle counts and outer-shell electrons.

Use it to compare simple atomic models

Shell diagrams help with introductory chemistry exercises about neutral atoms, ions, and isotopes. They are not literal pictures of electron paths or substitutes for orbital models.

Make the particle accounting explicit

  1. Use atomic number for protons. The proton count identifies the element.
  2. Specify the isotope. Neutron count depends on mass number, not just the element name.
  3. Account for charge. A positive ion has fewer electrons than protons; a negative ion has more.
  4. Check the shell totals. Electrons drawn across all shells must equal the intended total.
  5. Label the simplification. Shell rings are a teaching representation, not physical orbital tracks.

A shell sketch with checkable counts

MyMap draws the requested model and revises it through follow-up instructions. The oxygen example shows 8 protons, 8 neutrons, and electrons arranged 2, 6, representing neutral oxygen-16.

Common questions

Why do I need to specify an isotope?

Atoms of the same element can have different neutron counts. State the mass number or neutron count so the nucleus label does not rely on an unstated assumption.

Are electrons really moving along the drawn rings?

No. The rings are a simplified representation of shells used for teaching. They do not describe literal electron trajectories.

How do I request an ion?

Include the charge, such as Na+, and ask for the electron total to be checked before the shell diagram is drawn.
