Create a Frayer model vocabulary graphic organizer for the word 'democracy'

About the framework

Applying the Frayer Model to Vocabulary Development

This template applies the Frayer model — a four-quadrant graphic organizer developed by Dorothy Frayer at the University of Wisconsin — to vocabulary instruction. The model goes beyond simple definition-memorization by requiring students to engage with a word from four angles: what it means (definition), what it looks like (characteristics), what counts as an instance (examples), and what does not count (non-examples).

The non-examples quadrant is where the deepest learning happens. By articulating what democracy is NOT (dictatorship, oligarchy, theocracy), students sharpen the boundaries of the concept and develop the kind of precise understanding that transfers to reading comprehension and analytical writing.

Customize for any vocabulary word across any subject: science terms (photosynthesis, mitosis), math concepts (polynomial, ratio), or literary devices (metaphor, irony). Ask the AI to replace 'democracy' with your target word and it will generate all four quadrants with subject-appropriate content.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Can I change the vocabulary word?

Yes. Ask the AI: 'Create a Frayer model for the word photosynthesis' or any vocabulary term. It will generate definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples specific to that word.

Can I create multiple Frayer models for a vocabulary list?

Ask the AI to 'Create Frayer models for these 5 words: democracy, republic, monarchy, oligarchy, theocracy.' It will generate separate four-quadrant organizers for each word.

How do I use this as a student activity?

Export a blank version (ask the AI to 'Create a blank Frayer model template with just the quadrant labels') for students to fill in during reading or vocabulary study. The completed version serves as an answer key.
