How it works

01

Describe your project and risks

Explain the project or initiative and the risks you're aware of. If you don't know all the risks, AI will identify common ones based on the context you provide.

02

AI builds the matrix

MyMap plots each risk on a 5x5 likelihood-impact grid, color-codes severity (green to red), and labels each cell with the risk name and score.

03

Prioritize and mitigate

Ask AI to generate mitigation strategies for high-priority risks, assign risk owners, or update the matrix as risks are resolved. Export for project reviews.

About the framework

What is a Risk Matrix?

A risk matrix is a visual tool for assessing and prioritizing risks by plotting them on a grid according to two dimensions: likelihood (how probable is the risk?) and impact (how severe would the consequences be?). The resulting grid — typically 3x3 or 5x5 — color-codes risks from low (green) to critical (red), making it immediately clear which risks demand the most attention.

Risk matrices are a standard tool in project management, enterprise risk management (ERM), health and safety, and regulatory compliance. They are required by many ISO standards and are central to risk registers in formal project governance.

Why risk matrices work

  • Two-axis scoring prevents the common mistake of treating all risks as equally important
  • Color-coded severity lets stakeholders instantly identify which risks are critical vs. manageable
  • Prioritized mitigation focuses resources on high-likelihood, high-impact risks first
  • Shared risk register creates a common language for discussing risk across teams and leadership

Risk matrices are used in project planning, IT security assessments, infrastructure changes, financial planning, product launches, and operational audits.

MyMap's AI generates a populated risk matrix from a description of your project — risks identified, scored by likelihood and impact, and color-coded for immediate action.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Is the risk matrix maker free?

Yes — free to use without signing up. Free accounts include a generous number of AI messages per month. Upgrade to Pro for unlimited matrices.

What's the standard risk matrix scale?

A typical risk matrix uses a 5x5 grid with Likelihood (1=Rare to 5=Almost Certain) on one axis and Impact (1=Negligible to 5=Catastrophic) on the other. Risk score = Likelihood × Impact, ranging from 1 to 25.

Can AI identify risks I haven't thought of?

Yes. If you describe your project type, industry, and context, AI will suggest common risks based on its knowledge of similar projects — covering technical, operational, financial, and compliance dimensions.
