Check the plotted totals

Review the count in each group and reconcile the total before interpreting the pattern.

Show how observations are distributed

A frequency chart records how often values occur. Category counts help compare named groups, while numeric intervals help reveal where observations cluster across a range.

Use it when the distribution matters

Exam results, delivery times, and survey responses can look very different even when averages are similar. The support example groups 500 tickets into response-time ranges of unequal widths, so read the bars as counts per labeled range rather than a continuous density histogram.

Define the counting rules first

  1. Identify the observation. Say whether a count represents tickets, people, readings, or another unit.
  2. Avoid overlapping intervals. Define where a value on a boundary belongs.
  3. Keep numeric widths meaningful. Equal-width bins simplify comparison; unequal-width histograms require density scaling.
  4. Reconcile the total. Include missing or excluded observations in a separate accounting.
  5. Label frequency type. Counts, proportions, and cumulative frequencies answer different questions.

Turn counts into a readable distribution

MyMap drafts a chart from the data and grouping instructions you provide. Ask to change the bins or labels, then verify that the chart still represents the same observations.

Common questions

Is every frequency chart a histogram?

No. A frequency chart can count categories. A histogram groups numeric observations into intervals, where the interval widths affect interpretation.

Can I start with a table of counts?

Yes. Supply each category or interval and its count, plus the total and any excluded observations.

How should I read the support-time example?

Its bin counts total 500 tickets. The ranges have different widths and the last is open-ended, so compare the labeled counts without treating bar area as a density measure.
