About the framework

Locate oxygen’s six outer-shell electrons

This oxygen diagram pairs a nucleus labeled 8p+ 8n0 with eight electron markers and two shells. The side card lists atomic number 8, electron arrangement 2, 6, and six valence electrons. The example represents neutral oxygen-16.

The two inner-shell electrons and six outer-shell electrons make the model useful for comparing oxygen with other small atoms. The drawing contains no bonds or second oxygen atom, so it does not represent an oxygen molecule.

For a lesson on ions, request a separate oxide-ion model and label the change in electron count and charge. Keep the original atom beside it so students can distinguish a change in charge from a change in the nucleus.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Does this show O or O2?

It shows one oxygen atom. An O2 molecule would need two oxygen atoms and a representation of their bonding.

Is the example an oxygen ion?

No. It has eight protons and eight electrons, so it represents a neutral atom. An ion adaptation should change the electron count and add a charge label.

What stays the same when making oxygen-18?

Keep eight protons and, for a neutral atom, eight electrons. Change the nucleus to ten neutrons and identify the isotope as oxygen-18.
