Draw a labeled transverse wave diagram showing wavelength, amplitude, crest, and trough

Here's a labeled transverse wave: a smooth sine curve marking the crest, trough, amplitude from the rest line, and one full wavelength.

Check the measurements

Verify that amplitude starts at equilibrium and that wavelength or period matches the horizontal axis.

What is a wave diagram?

A wave diagram represents a repeating disturbance using a curve, particle pattern, or other schematic. A transverse-wave snapshot can show displacement against position. A time graph shows displacement at one location as time passes. Those two graphs may look similar but label different quantities.

When to use it

Use it when learning wave vocabulary or comparing properties. A longitudinal wave needs compression and rarefaction labels, or a clearly identified graph of a measured quantity, rather than an unexplained sideways sine curve.

What to include

  1. Axes identified. State whether the horizontal direction represents distance or time.
  2. Equilibrium visible. Include the rest or reference position used to measure displacement.
  3. Amplitude measured correctly. Measure from equilibrium to an extreme, not from crest to trough.
  4. Like points for wavelength. Measure between adjacent points in the same phase, such as crest to crest.
  5. Motion distinguished. Separate the direction particles oscillate from the direction the disturbance travels.

Build it with MyMap

MyMap drafts a wave figure from your specification and can adjust labels or add comparison panels. The example shows a transverse-wave curve with amplitude and wavelength annotations; check positions and scale before using generated geometry for measurement.

Common questions

Are wavelength and period the same thing?

No. Wavelength is a spatial separation between repeating points. Period is the time for one complete oscillation at a location.

Is amplitude the distance from crest to trough?

No. Amplitude is the maximum displacement from equilibrium. For a symmetric wave, crest-to-trough distance is twice the amplitude.

Can a sine curve represent a longitudinal wave?

It can graph a quantity such as displacement or pressure, but the axes must say so. A compression-and-rarefaction diagram is often clearer for showing the medium itself.
