Draw a vector addition diagram showing the resultant of two vectors using the parallelogram method

Here's a vector-addition diagram: vectors A and B drawn from a common origin, with the resultant R as the diagonal of the parallelogram.

01

Define the quantities

Provide each vector's magnitude, units, and direction using a consistent coordinate or compass convention.

02

Choose the construction

Ask for head-to-tail addition, a parallelogram, or components, and specify whether the drawing is schematic.

Check the resultant

Verify the start and endpoint, labels, and numerical calculation independently of the apparent arrow lengths.

What is a vector diagram?

A vector diagram represents quantities that have both magnitude and direction. Arrows encode those properties under a stated convention. In head-to-tail addition, the resultant runs from the first tail to the final head. In a parallelogram construction, it is the diagonal from the shared origin.

When to use it

Use it to explain force, velocity, or displacement addition within one consistent type of quantity. It is especially useful for seeing why vector addition differs from simply adding the lengths of two arrows.

What to include

  1. Compatible quantities. Combine vectors with matching physical meaning and units.
  2. A direction convention. State the coordinate axes, angle reference, or compass directions.
  3. A declared scale. Give a scale for measurement or label the figure schematic; do not infer precision from its appearance.
  4. Correct construction. Keep each vector's direction and length when translating it for head-to-tail addition.
  5. A checked resultant. Draw it between the correct endpoints and verify its magnitude and direction using the supplied values.

Build it with MyMap

MyMap can draft the construction you describe and label the vectors and resultant. The example shows a parallelogram with A, B, and R = A + B. It is a schematic without numerical magnitudes, so its displayed arrow lengths should not be used as measured data.

Common questions

Are vector diagrams always drawn to scale?

No. Many are schematic. State a scale when length measurements matter and check that the drawing follows it; verify numerical results separately.

How do I show subtraction?

Represent A minus B as A plus the opposite of B. Reverse B's direction while preserving its magnitude, then perform the addition.

Why is distance different from displacement?

Distance adds the lengths of the traveled segments. Displacement is the vector from the starting point to the final point, so direction affects its magnitude.
