About the framework

Applying Plot Diagrams to Short Story Analysis

This template applies Freytag's pyramid framework to short story analysis — the visual representation of narrative structure that ELA teachers use from middle school through college literature courses. The ascending/descending shape+edge layout physically represents the rising tension, climactic peak, and resolution that defines dramatic structure.

The six nodes are positioned to create a mountain shape: exposition at the bottom left, rising action climbing upward, climax at the peak (marked with a diamond to emphasize its pivotal nature), falling action descending, and resolution at the bottom right. Brief description cards below key stages define what happens at each point, giving students both the structural framework and the analytical vocabulary.

Customize for any narrative text. Ask the AI to 'Fill in this plot diagram for The Tell-Tale Heart by Poe' or 'Map the plot of The Hunger Games' and it will populate each stage with text-specific content while maintaining the visual arc structure.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Can I fill this in for a specific story?

Yes. Ask the AI: 'Map the plot of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson onto this diagram' or name any story. It will populate exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution with story-specific events.

How do I add more rising action events?

Ask the AI to 'Add Rising Action 3 and Rising Action 4 between the existing nodes.' The arc shape will extend with more steps building toward the climax.

Can I add character and theme analysis?

Ask the AI to 'Add a character development track and theme analysis alongside each plot stage.' It will create parallel content showing how characters change and themes develop at each narrative point.
