How to build a SCAMPER analysis

No template to fill in and no drawing. You talk; the canvas keeps up.

What is a SCAMPER analysis?

SCAMPER is a set of seven questions for changing something that already exists. Each lens pushes the brainstorm in a different direction, from replacing a component to reversing a sequence. The ideas are proposals to investigate, not evidence that a redesign will work.

When to use it

It is useful when a team keeps suggesting minor variations of the same idea. Start with a specific object or workflow so the questions produce concrete changes.

What to include

  1. A defined starting point. Describe the current design before proposing substitutions.
  2. Seven distinct lenses. Keep Adapt focused on borrowing an approach and Modify focused on changing an existing feature.
  3. Specific changes. Name the part, step, material, or user interaction being changed.
  4. Visible constraints. Carry cost, accessibility, maintenance, and other stated requirements into each idea.
  5. A testable shortlist. Select promising ideas and describe the observation that would support or reject them.

Build it with MyMap

MyMap arranges your ideas under the seven SCAMPER headings and can expand a weak section when you ask. The coffee cup example includes substitutions, combined functions, and alternative uses; its concepts still need practical testing.

Common questions

What does the R stand for?

Reverse or Rearrange. You might reverse who performs a task, change the order of steps, or turn an arrangement around.

Can SCAMPER be used for services?

Yes. Treat the service steps, handoffs, and interactions as the things you can substitute, combine, or remove.

Are all seven sections supposed to produce a winning idea?

No. The lenses widen the search. Keep weak ideas visible during exploration, then select the ones worth testing.
