Build What Matters

State your business goal. AI maps it to the actors who can help achieve it, the behavioral impacts they need to create, and the deliverables that drive those impacts.

State the change you want, its measure, and any timeframe you already know.

02

Identify actors and impacts

Name who can influence the goal and how their behavior would need to change.

Propose and question deliverables

Attach possible interventions to those changes, then review the assumptions connecting the branches.

What is an impact map?

An impact map links a goal to the people who can influence it, the behavior changes that may help, and the deliverables that could support those changes. It makes the reasoning behind a feature visible.

When to question the feature list

Use it before committing to a solution or when a backlog has lost its connection to outcomes. The fitness-app example maps a goal of increasing monthly active users through actors, impacts, and deliverables.

Rules for a useful impact map

  1. Use a measurable goal. A metric and target make the desired change concrete.
  2. Name specific actors. Describe people or groups who can affect the goal.
  3. Write impacts as behavior. Explain what an actor would do differently.
  4. Keep deliverables optional. Treat each feature or intervention as a proposed route to the impact.
  5. Question every link. Record why the behavior should affect the goal and what evidence is missing.

How MyMap builds the connections

MyMap drafts a branching map from your goal and context. Ask it to distinguish behavior from output, explore another actor, or mark the weakest assumptions for validation.

Common questions

How is an impact different from a deliverable?

An impact is a change in what an actor does, such as completing setup. A deliverable is something you create to encourage it, such as a setup guide.

Can I start from an existing backlog?

Yes. Supply the backlog and goal, then ask for each item to be connected to an actor and impact. Leave items with no defensible connection open for review.

Does an impact map prove a feature will work?

No. Its links are hypotheses to examine. Add evidence and experiment results as you learn.
