Check every feeding link

Review the organism names, direction of arrows, and trophic labels before using the diagram.

A food chain follows one route of energy transfer

A food chain shows a linear sequence of feeding relationships. Producers form the starting biological link in many classroom chains, and arrows point from the organism being eaten toward the organism receiving that energy.

For introducing feeding relationships

Use a chain to explain one pathway clearly. Choose a food web when an organism has several food sources or predators and those branching relationships are part of the lesson.

Keep the pathway biologically meaningful

  1. Choose a consistent habitat. Organisms in the chain should plausibly interact.
  2. Verify the feeding links. A list of animals ordered by size is not a food chain.
  3. Use energy-direction arrows. Point from food to consumer and state this in a legend.
  4. Label roles within the pathway. An organism's trophic role can depend on what it eats.
  5. Treat percentages as assumptions. Energy-transfer efficiency varies; label classroom estimates rather than presenting them as universal.

Arrange one feeding sequence on the canvas

MyMap turns the specified links into a diagram you can revise. The ocean example is a simplified chain from phytoplankton to predators; its energy-loss annotation is a classroom approximation, not a measured value for every link.

Common questions

Which way should the arrows point?

For an energy-flow food chain, point from the food source to the organism that consumes it. Add a legend to remove ambiguity.

Is the ten-percent rule exact?

No. It is a common classroom approximation. Use the values given in the exercise or a relevant source when calculating energy transfer.

Where do decomposers belong?

Decomposers connect to material from many parts of an ecosystem. If those connections matter, a food web or nutrient-cycle diagram may be clearer than one linear chain.
