What does a DNA replication diagram show?

A DNA replication diagram explains how a DNA molecule supplies templates for new complementary strands. An overview can show unwinding and the formation of two daughter molecules. A fork diagram adds the directional detail needed to explain continuous and discontinuous synthesis.

When to use it

Use an overview for introducing the process and a fork view for reasoning about strand direction. Keep enzyme detail matched to the lesson rather than combining every protein into one crowded figure.

What to include

  1. Old and new distinguished. Use a clear key so each daughter molecule shows an original strand paired with a new one.
  2. Direction labels. Show the relevant 5-prime and 3-prime ends when explaining synthesis.
  3. Correct synthesis arrows. New DNA synthesis proceeds 5-prime to 3-prime on both leading and lagging strands.
  4. Different strand patterns. Show continuous leading synthesis and fragments on the lagging strand when using a fork view.
  5. Specific enzyme roles. Keep unwinding, primer formation, strand extension, and joining fragments distinct.

Build it with MyMap

MyMap draws a process or fork layout from your requested labels and revises it through follow-up instructions. The example is a broad flowchart of unwinding and complementary synthesis; it does not show a detailed replication fork.

Common questions

Is a flowchart enough to explain replication?

A flowchart can explain the major stages. Use a fork diagram when the learning goal includes strand polarity or leading and lagging synthesis.

Does the lagging strand grow in the opposite chemical direction?

No. Both new strands are synthesized 5-prime to 3-prime. The lagging strand is built in fragments because of the template's orientation at the fork.

What does semiconservative mean?

Each daughter DNA molecule contains one strand from the original molecule and one newly synthesized strand. Use two colors with a legend to make that relationship visible.
