Design a system architecture diagram for a SaaS application with microservices

Here's a SaaS system architecture with a load balancer, API gateway, microservices, and data stores. Traffic flows from clients through the gateway to individual services.

01

Choose a view and scope

State whether the diagram should show logical components, deployed infrastructure, or one request path.

02

Describe components and connections

Supply names, responsibilities, data stores, external services, and the relationships you know.

Review boundaries and arrows

Check the draft against the design. Ask to label protocols or events, distinguish unknowns, and remove unsupported connections.

What does an architecture diagram explain?

An architecture diagram shows a selected view of a system: its parts, responsibilities, boundaries, and interactions. A useful view helps a reader answer a design question without having to infer the meaning of every box and arrow.

Use it for design conversations and onboarding

A system overview can orient a new teammate, while a focused diagram can support a change proposal. Decide which question matters before including every service and infrastructure detail.

Make the system view unambiguous

  1. Choose one abstraction level. Logical modules and physical deployment details should not be mixed without explanation.
  2. Label connections. Name the request, data, event, or dependency represented by an arrow.
  3. Show ownership boundaries. Make external services and separately owned components distinguishable.
  4. Separate interaction styles. A synchronous call and a queued event have different implications.
  5. Avoid implied guarantees. A drawn replica, gateway, or boundary does not establish a reliability or security property.

A diagram from your system description

MyMap draws the components and relationships you describe and updates them through follow-up requests. The SaaS example includes clients, a CDN, gateway, services, a queue, and data stores. It is an illustrative architecture, not a verified deployment blueprint.

Common questions

Will the diagram discover my running infrastructure?

This workflow uses the system description you provide. Treat it as a design draft to compare with your actual configuration.

Should every component appear in one diagram?

Include what helps answer the view's main question. A high-level overview and focused interaction diagrams are often easier to review than one crowded page.

Can I specify exact technology names?

Yes. Supply the names and connections you want represented. Review the resulting diagram for accuracy; a named component does not prove its configuration or behavior.
