Create an ER diagram for a library management system
About the framework
Five entities make up this library example: BOOK, MEMBER, LOAN, AUTHOR, and CATEGORY. Loan connects a book to a member and stores checkout, due, and return dates plus a status. Book includes a unique ISBN, publication year, copies_available, and a category foreign key; Member includes a unique email and membership details.
Four relationships are shown. Author is drawn as writing multiple books, but Book has no author_id attribute or BookAuthor junction. The model also tracks available copies as a count rather than giving each physical copy its own identity.
Use the diagram to discuss a small lending system, then decide how to represent coauthors and individual copies. Those choices affect what a loan points to and how availability is calculated. Add the missing relationships and constraints before using the drawing as an implementation specification.

Frequently asked questions
No. Book holds a copies_available count, and Loan points to Book. Add a BookCopy entity if each physical copy needs its own identifier and loan history.
The drawn relationship is one author to many books, with no author key in Book. A BookAuthor junction would make a many-author, many-book model explicit.
No fine or payment entity is present. The loan dates and status provide context for borrowing, but any fine rules and records need to be modeled separately.
