Create a data flow diagram for an e-commerce order processing system
About the framework
The e-commerce DFD connects browsing and cart activity to placing, processing, shipping, and notifying about an order. Six circular processes sit between three external entities: Customer, Payment Gateway, and Warehouse. Product DB and Order DB are the two data stores.
Thirteen labeled connections include Search query, Checkout, Charge, Confirmation, Store order, and Status update. The payment gateway returns a confirmation to Place Order; Process Order sends separate flows toward fulfillment and customer notification. Catalog responses and warehouse replies are not explicitly drawn.
Start with these boundaries when discussing an online store, then supply the order states and information each service exchanges. Refunds, failed payments, inventory reservations, and shipment tracking need additional flows if they belong in your system model.

Frequently asked questions
The sample includes Product DB for catalog access and Order DB for storing orders. It does not model separate customer, cart, payment, or inventory stores.
Place Order sends a Charge flow to Payment Gateway, which returns Confirmation. The example does not show payment failure, refunds, or asynchronous updates.
Ship Order sends Pick and pack to the external Warehouse. Add warehouse responses and tracking data if you need to represent what happens after that request.
