01

Choose the body

Name the object and describe its contacts, motion, and applied forces.

02

State the assumptions

Provide mass, angles, and friction conditions where known; leave other values symbolic.

Review the vectors

Check which forces act on the chosen body and verify directions before using the diagram in calculations.

Isolate one body and its external forces

A free-body diagram represents a chosen object separately from its surroundings, with arrows for the external forces acting on it. It provides the starting point for a mechanics analysis.

Reason about forces before solving

Use it for contact forces, tension, friction, or motion on a slope. The fixed example is a labeled box-on-ramp illustration; review its assumptions and force labels before treating it as a worked solution.

Keep forces and assumptions distinct

  1. Define the system boundary. Include forces acting on the selected object, not forces it applies to others.
  2. Identify actual interactions. A force should correspond to a contact or other physical interaction.
  3. Choose useful axes. Label axes separately from the force vectors.
  4. Avoid counting components twice. A force and its resolved components are alternative representations of the same vector.
  5. Use symbolic unknowns. Do not invent magnitudes or apply a friction formula without the relevant conditions.

Build a diagram for your stated scenario

MyMap organizes force labels and vectors from your description. Ask to clarify an interaction or separate components, then check the physics against the problem statement.

Common questions

Does moving forward require a forward force?

Do not add a force merely because an object is moving. Identify the actual interactions, then use the net force to analyze acceleration.

Should the normal force always equal the weight?

No. Its value depends on the contact geometry, other forces, and acceleration. Derive it from the stated situation.

Can I leave force values unknown?

Yes. Symbolic labels are often preferable until the force directions and governing equations have been established.
