What is a Cladogram?

A cladogram is a branching diagram that shows the evolutionary relationships between organisms based on shared derived characteristics (synapomorphies). Developed from the principles of cladistics — a classification method introduced by entomologist Willi Hennig in the 1950s — cladograms organize organisms into nested groups called clades, where each clade shares a common ancestor.

Unlike other tree diagrams, cladogram branch lengths carry no information — only the branching pattern matters. Each branching point (node) represents a hypothetical common ancestor, and the traits that define each split are labeled along the branches.
