What is a character map?

A character map organizes what a character is like, what they want, and how they relate to other people in a story. It connects traits to actions and conflicts so the profile supports analysis or writing.

Use it to understand a person within the story

Readers can prepare an essay or discussion; writers can check whether a character's choices fit their motivations. A full cast network is more useful when relationships between many characters are the main focus.

Connect traits to narrative evidence

  1. Distinguish wants and needs. A stated goal may differ from the deeper change a character requires.
  2. Support trait labels. Attach an action, line, or scene from your notes to each major claim.
  3. Label relationships. Explain the connection or tension rather than drawing an unlabeled line.
  4. Track change by stage. Use beginning, turning point, and ending only when the story supports them.
  5. Separate invention from analysis. Original character ideas and claims about a published text need different treatment.

A profile you can deepen

MyMap arranges the character details you provide and expands or revises branches when asked. The Atticus Finch example covers appearance, personality, motivations, and relationships; it does not include a plotted development arc or scene references.

Common questions

Can I use it for an original character?

Yes. Describe the role, goal, pressures, and relationships you have in mind, then ask for gaps or contradictions to explore.

Will it invent quotations from a novel?

Ask it to use only the quotations you supply and leave missing evidence as a question. Verify textual claims before using them in an essay.

Does every character need a transformation arc?

No. Some characters remain relatively stable while influencing others. Map the role the text supports rather than forcing a change.
