01

Supply metric definitions

Provide actual values, targets, units, reporting periods, and whether higher or lower is better.

02

Define the ranges

List the thresholds and labels for performance bands. If none exist, ask for a simple actual-versus-target comparison.

Check the scale

Review the bar, target marker, and band boundaries. Keep unlike units separate or explain normalization.

What is a bullet chart?

A bullet chart combines an actual-value bar, a target marker, and background ranges in a compact display. It helps a reader see both the gap to a target and the context used to judge performance.

When a compact KPI view helps

Use it for a scorecard where the question is how a metric compares with an agreed target. The chart is only as meaningful as the definitions behind its range boundaries.

Rules for meaningful target comparisons

  1. State the measure. Include the unit and reporting period beside the metric.
  2. Show a distinct target. Keep the reference marker visible against the actual bar.
  3. Define performance direction. Lower can be better for measures such as waiting time.
  4. Use justified thresholds. Do not invent poor, acceptable, and good boundaries.
  5. Explain normalization. A percentage-of-target scale is different from the raw metric.

How MyMap lays out the comparison

MyMap can arrange supplied metrics into editable bullet-style charts. The example places three business KPIs on a shared percentage scale; its labels do not explain the normalization, so define units and calculations explicitly in your version.

Common questions

Can several KPIs share one scale?

Only when their units are comparable or you define a meaningful normalization. Otherwise use separate scales and explicit unit labels.

What if I have no performance bands?

Provide actual and target values without inventing qualitative thresholds. Add bands once the criteria are agreed.

How do I chart a lower-is-better metric?

State that direction and define the bands accordingly. A lower actual value should not automatically appear worse.

What is the difference from a bar chart?

The target marker and contextual ranges add a reference for judging the actual value. A basic bar chart mainly compares magnitudes.
