Create a timeline of American history
About the framework
This American history example groups fourteen dated entries into Colonial and Revolution, Expansion and Civil War, Industrialization and World Wars, and Modern America. It begins with Jamestown and includes independence, the Constitution, territorial expansion, the Civil War, the Depression, world-war entry, civil rights, and spaceflight before ending in 2001.
Several entries pair an event with a short consequence or context note. These are compressed summaries: the 1787 Constitution entry also says the federal government was established, and 1989 is labeled the end of the Cold War. Those labels need more precise treatment in a detailed chronology.
Use the timeline as a selected-event study outline. Add the dates and distinctions required by your syllabus, and expand perspectives absent from the sample, including Indigenous history, immigration, and social movements. The example's starting point does not define the beginning of American history.

Frequently asked questions
No. Jamestown is the first entry. Add earlier Indigenous societies and events if your assignment covers the longer history of the continent.
The headings use years, and some notes combine related developments. Check the difference between a document being drafted, ratified, and taking effect when expanding the Constitution entry.
Match its four periods to your syllabus, remove irrelevant entries, and add a cause and consequence question for each selected event. Supply course materials to guide any missing topics.
