About the framework

Dashboard Framework for Project Status Reporting

This template applies the KPI dashboard framework specifically to project status reporting — consolidating the metrics that project managers present in weekly status meetings, steering committee reviews, and executive updates. Instead of a 10-slide deck, a single dashboard gives stakeholders everything they need at a glance.

The layout follows the inverted pyramid of project health: the top row shows four KPI cards (Budget, Timeline, Tasks, Risk) that answer the four questions every stakeholder asks. Below, two detail panels provide context — Milestones shows where the project is on its planned trajectory, and Team Allocation reveals whether resource constraints explain any delays.

Project managers use this template to replace status email chains with a visual artifact that can be screenshotted and shared. The AI can populate the dashboard with your actual project data — budget numbers, milestone dates, task counts, and team names — making it a living status report rather than a static template.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

How do I populate this with my actual project data?

Describe your project: 'Update the dashboard with: Budget $280K of $400K, Week 8 of 16, 64 of 95 tasks done, 2 high risks. Milestones: Requirements done, Design done, Dev in progress, Testing upcoming.' The AI will fill in your specific numbers.

Can I add a burndown chart or Gantt view?

Yes. Ask the AI: 'Replace the milestone panel with a sprint burndown chart showing the last 10 days of work remaining.' The dashboard will swap the text panel for a visual chart.

How often should I update this dashboard?

Update KPI cards at each status meeting (weekly), milestones when they complete, and risk ratings when new risks emerge. Many teams use this as their live meeting artifact — opening it at the start of each standup or status review.
