Apple Inc. was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in 1976. Initially a manufacturer of personal computers, the company diversified to produce the Macintosh in 1984, which was the first mass-market personal computer that featured a graphical user interface, built-in screen and mouse.

In 1974, Jobs decided to visit India for spiritual enlightenment. With a friend, he planned to stay for three months at the Neem Karoli Baba ashram, but their stay was shortened when they unexpectedly contracted dysentery.
